I had an employee in 2018 who completed his W4 as tax exempt. I put him into the payroll system as exempt. His W2 printed with zero Wages, Tips Other Compensation (Box 1). I've never had an "exempt" employee before and he's questioning if the W-2 is correct. I've looked on the IRS website but don't see an example or explanation of what a W-2 would like for a tax exempt employee. I would like to make sure it's correct before I tell him to contact his accountant to determine how to fill out his 2018 tax return. Does anyone know if the W-2 would be correct with no wages entered in box 1 because of his tax exempt situation?

Thank you for your assistance

Box 1 on the W2 Form is for Wages Subject to Federal Income Tax. If he was marked as exempt from FIT, there is nothing to enter there.
