I have a W2 that Box 1 does not match Box 3 or 5. This is not a tipped employee. How do I correct it?

Box 1 is for wages subject to Federal Income Tax, boxes 3 and 5 are for wages subject to FICA and Medicare. There are a number of reasons box 1 would be different, deductions that are exempt from FIT, marking an employee exempt from FIT, etc. Not knowing what you've done during the year, there is now way I can tell you without actually seeing your database.

I have an issue with the 2017 W-2. There are 10 employees and I learned the FICA and Medicare are wrong on just one of them. They all get the same type of hourly pay with a bonus. Very simple payroll. The Fica was over paid and the medicare was under paid. I never change these fields so I am not sure why they are off. Now I need to submit W-2C which your system does not support. I am worried that the 941's will be wrong as well. I will have to go through each quarter and find the errors. I know to look for errors in the 941 when someone goes over the FICA limit as it is never correct. My client is not real happy right now. I just hope there are not mistakes on any other W-2's. Has anyone else had this happen or can anyone give me a reason this might have happened? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, every Quarter when you print your 941 Form if line 7 is more than a few cents you have a problem. Our 941 math audits the saved transactions for problems.

This FAQ has a list of all the mistakes that users have done in the past to cause the problems:
