pqywindow won't connect to quickbooks

I have used paywindow and quickbooks 2008 for years. It has been great, but I just had to get a new computer, Windows 8, ugh, and now after installing quickbooks 2008 and paywindow with the quickbooks add in, I can not get it to connect to quickbooks. If I try to enter with paywindow only opened and then try and connect it tells me to open quickbooks first, as it always has. If I then open quickbooks it either crashes and sends an error report or it tells me that the file is open and that I need to close it first. I am logged in with administrator privileges and have also right clicked and told it to open as administrator and still get the same messages.

Unfortunately we do not have any control over how Windows 8 handles that old version of QuickBooks and I'm guessing that may be the problem. And Intuit is making it harder to allow poking the data into QuickBooks as they want the payroll business themselves. :-(
