Hi Paul, It seems like every time I do payroll there is either an update to the whole program or the tax tables.

Lately when I do these updates and have to restart, when I open the program again, I get the welcome new user screen. The when I try to find my company file, the one I pick is the one with my company name but when I open it, it only has sample data on it.

So what I have to do is find my backup file, restore it and then I'm good to go. This has happened twice now in exactly that manner, where I have to restore the backup zip file to get my current payroll to work.

It would be helpful to know what all these files are called and where they are supposed to be path-wise. Also why does installing an upgrade seem to wreck everything and start me over from scratch to where I have to use the backup restore in order to do payroll?

The database is never touched by the setup program Steve, so you must be either uninstalling and then changing the default settings or something during the setup process. I've probably installed thousands of times as I install every update with a copy of the setup before uploading to the website, then again by downloading from the website and then again by downloading from the alternate download link the next day and *never* lose the pointer company file.

The default folder is in the sub-folder "PayWindow Data Files" of the Documents or My Documents folder. Like the path to my company file is:

My Documents\PayWindow Data Files\ZPAY Payroll Systems, Inc 2011.dxi

I never uninstall PayWindow and always when installing simply click the "Next" button all the way through not changing any of the default settings in the setup program.

The only way to have a problem is to change things during the setup as 99.9% of our users never lose the pointers to their company database. So follow the instructions in this Video on Restoring so it places the company file where it belongs:

http://zpay.com/PayWindowTutorials/RestoreCompanyDatabase/

Then click File and Open Company like we show at the end of that video, make sure it is looking in the My Documents\PayWindow Data Files folder and open your company database.
