Can w2's be printed alphabetical?

Seems they can only be printed by order of employee numbers. I know in the past I've been able to do alphabetically. Does it matter?

Yes, it was changed when employers had employees with the same last names and was causing problems and locking it to an index that does not allow duplicates (the Employee ID) fixed the problem.
