deleting a transaction

I entered a transaction, clicked the "pay" button, then clicked the "save and close" button. Now I'm attempting to delete the transaction. When I "delete" the transaction goes into edit mode and all of the data is grayed out, but when I click on the "save and close" button nothing happens. If I press F11 I get the message "Cannot update. Database or object is read-only". Not only will it not let me delete but now I can't edit the transaction. Nothing happens when I press the "save and close" button. I'm running version 10.0.23.0 on Windows 7.

See if rebooting the computer restores access to the database. If not you may have the problem I've seen with Windows 7 where the files in the documents folder are suddenly marked as read only. See this article on how to fix that:
