View Full Version : Suggestion to Force (or Prompt) Checking for Updates

You do a great job of updating PayWindow frequently in response to changes in the law or when bugs are identified by your own efforts or users. No complaints whatever. Thanks.

I would like to suggest an option for prompting the user to check for updates as part of starting the program. In effect, I think it would be helpful for the program to automatically do a Help/Updates sequence when the program starts each time (or just each day).

I know some users won't want to deal with that verification each time they start the program. Consequently, it makes sense to me to have an option in Tools/Options/Prompts to force checking for Updates each time the program starts (or once a day). In this manner, a user can be reminded continually to maintain the program. This is also helpful for situations where the frequent user of the program (say an office manager) does not get the notices because another person (say the business owner) is the registered user.

My reason for suggesting this is that I have been riding out the consequences of missing the update early this year when the company contribution for FICA changed. I was travelling when that update came out, got home and needed to do payroll. Did it, paid the employees, paid the IRS, and then started digging out of the backload of e-mail etc. I found and implemented the update a few days later and did not notice that the payroll stuff that I had already submitted was incorrect. The whole thing is my fault for not checking for updates each time I start the program or at least digging through my e-mail before starting a payroll event. The net effect is that I got fined an insignificant amout for underpaying. But the real penalty has been trying to figure out how to get everthing sorted in Quickbooks, Paywindow, future W-2s, and handling the silly non-deductible $0.12 penalty and $0.08 interest.

This tale of woe is not your problem. Just a little reminder for other users to update continually and a desparate plea to help us avoid the pitfalls of not updating when the flow of our lives gets in the way of doing the right thing at the right time.

I've been thinking about an option that can be turned off by those that do not want it where it will automatically check to see if there are updates on startup of PayWindow. If there are, it will open the Update Checker automatically so you can choose to install or not at the time. The user will have the option to turn that off if they want control for updates as it is now.

That would sure do it for me. I hope this improvement makes the cut for the next update.

I think it has been added. I'm now running 9.0.46.0 and there is a dialog box at Tools / Options / Prompts that has the relevant options. So far, I think it is working. I have not checked "Don't Show Again: Quit Prompt" and have checked "Check for new updates when PayWindow Starts". :p

Thanks Paul.
