Is it not possible to put a SS# in this field? Got someone who needs to issue a 1099misc, but doesn't have an EIN as they don't have any employees.

Actually, I know I've done so before. I just went & opened another client that I know doesn't have an EIN & there's a SS# in the field. But now the field seems to be limited to 10 chars.

No you cannot enter a SSAN into the Federal ID entry in the Company Setup.

You are probably thinking of the ability to enter a Federal ID in the Employee (Payee) SSAN entry as that is possible.

Nope, that's not what I'm thinking. Just opened another client to confirm. I have someone I did 1099misc for from 2003 thru 2006, and they have a SS# in that field. So clearly, I was able to do it in the past.

At any rate, the question now is, why can't we? Off the top of my head (granted there's lots of room up there these days), I'm not aware of a rule that requires an EIN to issue a 1099misc, or by extension, a 1096. Especially considering they are used to report, among several other things, NON-employee compensation.

Actually the rule is imposed by the 941 Form and the 940 Form and the 943 Form, etc. as if there is not the specific number of digits in that entry field, the forms blows up when we populate them for printing.

If you try our WageFiler program, we have many more stringent data checking as for electronic transmission it is even more important everything is correct in count as well as letters and digits.

Yeah, I knew where this was gonna go. So I just made it work the way it should myself. Problem solved.
