I set up the Texas state tax like the Tutorial and the pay window is still not calculating state tax on the check. What do you think it is?

Also is allowances the same as dependents in the employee set-up? Sorry for the some what easy question but in quickbooks it was written as allowances just like in the w2 and I didnt know it was referred to as anything else.

Yes Charlotte, allowances and dependents are one in the same.

There is not State Tax in Texas, just the SUTA tax which you should setup in the company override. See this FAQ for instruction on entering an override for your SUTA tax:

You still need to attach the Texas tax record to each employee as shown in the Tutorial on adding employees.

SUTA is an employer's tax and appears on the Employer's Totals report.
