I understand the importance of backing up the software's data and do perform the backups when prompted. However, is there an easy way to ensure the data is indeed backing up?

Thank you in advance for you assistance.

If you double click on the backup file on your backup disk, you should open the ZIP file allowing you to view the contents if you have Windows Vista or if you have a program like WinZip installed on Windows XP or 2000.

And you can double your backup efforts if you are using something like Microsoft's OneCare system which is anti-virus, anti-phishing, anti-malware and automatic backups of your documents folder to an exterrnal removable hard drive.

When I attempt to open the backup, I receive the error message, "Your data file is set to "Read Only", you must set it to "Read/Write" in order for us to open it." I have checked the properties of the file and it appears to be a read/write file vs a read only file. How can I rectify this?

Thanks again.

Are you backed up to a CD?

CD's do not allow ZIP activities, you would have to copy the file to say maybe your desktop and then make sure that the properties are not Read only and reset them if needed and then try to open and view.

I'd suggest using a small USB memory stick as they are cheap and will hold many years of backups on them.

I am backing up to my desktop as well as a flash drive. Attempts to open either file provide me with the same error message.

Thank you.

Let me see if I'm understanding you correctly...

The backup file is saved on your desktop, and it has a file name like "My Company filename.zip".

You double click on it and it gives you an error telling you it is read only.

Is that correct?

And before we go any further, tell me what version of Windows you have, XP, 2000 or Vista? And when PayWindow is open, what version number is in the top left of the program, 7.0.? and I am looking for that question mark.

Paul,

Yes, one backup file is saved to my desktop with the following properties:

General:
Company name042909
Type of file: Compressed (zipped)
Attributes - neither read-only or hidden is checked

Security:
Read & execute, read and write are all selected

The operating system is XP Professional.
The version of PayWindows is 7.0.24.

Thank you.

If you have a problem restoring in PayWindow, upgrade to the current release, 7.0.30 and let me know if you still have a problem.

In order to peek into ZIP files, you must have a ZIP tool like WinZip installed. That is not part of Windows, you would need to purchase it from http://winzip.com.

Software problems:
I generated our bi-weekly payroll on 5-28-09
I saved the data to my C drive as well as an external removable drive
I opened up PayWindow this morning and my 5-28-09 data is absent -
the last transaction date is 5-14-09
Question: How can this happen?

Restore problems:
I attempted to restore my 5-28-09 data from both backups, but to
no avail - last transaction date is still 5-14-09
Questions: Why does the restore function not work?
What is my next course of action other than to reprocess the 5-28-09 payroll?

Thank you,
gail

I'm guessing you are doing payroll for more than one company and as a result have not kept the data files all in the same folder.

In PayWindow Click in the menu selection "File", then "Directory" and then "Company Organizer". Use the Search Button and it will search your hard drive for all PayWindow data files.

I believe this is the same problem, you are restoring to a folder that is not the same as the one that you are opening up your files from.
