Paul,

There seems to be a small problem with the January 2009 version of Form 941.

In previous versions of this form as produced by PayWindow, I was able to add information to fields in the form (e.g. Part 5: Name, Title, Date, Phone). Similarly, Part 6 (though I don't use that).

Additionally, the company name does not appear on the page 2 and I don't have the opportunity to fill that in either.

In comparing this version of the form with previous versions, it appears that the .pdf Properties are incorrectly set by PayWindow. Specifically, in the .pdf file, do File / Properties / Security and notice that "Filling of form fields" is "Not Allowed" in the January 2009 version, but is "Allowed" in previous versions. There is a similar difference regarding "Creation of Template Pages", but I suspect that is not important to this problem.

I downloaded the January 2009 version from the IRS site, and it allows Form Filling. Consequently, I suspect that PayWindow just needs to make an appropriate setting somewhere and all will be well.

For the record: I am using Version 7.0.16. It is updated in all respects. I am also using Adobe Reader 8.1.3.

I certainly understand that the IRS's late release of this form has created some urgency to get this out to us and that errors are more likely in this situation.

Thanks for a great product. I look forward to your response.

Bruce

This was strange as the we were passing the Company name to the 2009 941 form and it was printing it on the first page but not on the second page. We found a way to force this and it is now fixed in the current program download build 7.0.17.

Also the security code that the IRS put in the form would not allow it to be edited after we passed the data to the form. So we removed the security code from the PDF template we got from the IRS and you can now edit it with the FREE Adobe Acrobat reader.

Thanks Paul,

That was a quick response. I updated and the form fields now accept input as you described. I also noticed that you checked the box for the first quarter too. Nice catch.

Unfortunately, the name on the second page is picking up the Trade Name instead of the Company Name. This is not a big problem because it can still be edited manually. I was able to print the form with everything correct as far as I can tell. So, I seem to be good to go.

The form still does not allow the edited version with fields filled to be saved, so I will just print to a .pdf for my online records or scan the printed version.

Perhaps these things will be fixed the next time the IRS pumps out a new version of the .pdf on their site. Hopefully, they will give you some a little more time next time.

Thanks again for an effective fix in short order.

I put the wrong pdf file in theer so download again as I put the final we did when we were testing.

I doubt that you will ever be able to save again using the FREE reader as the code to save is what we had to take out in order for you to edit. I think it has something to do with the Adobe licensing, as they make big money by selling licenses to have forms that you can complete and save like the raw form from the IRS. And they must have some way to know that you did not type the info in when we poke it in with software which blocks the editing then.

So Adobe makes money both ways, selling licenses to have forms like the raw 941 and selling Acrobat Pro so people like me can save any completed Acrobat form.

Searching for "best price adobe acrobat" will give you some bargains. And if you have a student in the house, you can get it from the Academic Stores at even better prices.
